Mythology

According to mythology, Folegandros was created by God Neptune when he got angry with the Cyclades Nymphs and decided to turn them into islands.

The naming of the island also has a version in mythology since it is believed that the first inhabitants of the island were some shepherds seeking for grassland for their flocks. Since all shepherds were men (andres in the Greek language) the island became known as “Polyandros” meaning many men. From that name derives the current name of the island.
