Academics for tradition

The University of the Mountains (UoM or Panepistimio ton Oreon in Greek) is a Non-Profit Organization founded and supported by the University of Crete which is well-known for its influential research and significant impact in the scientific society even at an international level.

Traditions in Crete

This astounding initiative aims at bringing closer the people who live on the mountainous areas of Crete, boasting a rich culture and intact tradition, with the UoM academic staff and students.

Local culture in Crete

UOM has established 4 principal Work Groups researching and taking action in four main fields:
– Health
– Society / Culture
– Economy / Environment
– Education

Their activity involves sessions that take place in various regions of the entire island and include public lectures, meetings that promote dialogue in traditional cafes even in forgotten mountainous villages, cultural events, seminars to support local school work and health related missions. Economic counseling and the promotion of professional partnerships of local businesses and production units with established companies or organizations are also intended.

This unique institution is an open door to interactive dialogue giving the opportunity for substantial education to people living in the sidelined parts of Crete not only by offering plain knowledge but also by increasing their awareness of the unique local characteristics and tradition. The UoM also provides for health services in those areas where access is indeed very difficult and people live isolated from all comforts of contemporary living.

And all this with the utmost respect of these areas’ valuable inheritance, customs and distinctive culture.

CNN has also dedicated a documentary to the University of Mountains and its exceptional attempt to bring together the academic society with everyday life.
